THE SELF-HELP GROUP FOR SUPPORTING JOB-SEEKING
MANAGERS & PROFESSIONALS IN WEST BERKSHIRE
Curriculum Map
Each session of meetings takes the member through a series of topics in a sequence similar to that of most redundancy - job-seeking cycles. The diagram below shows these phases:
Coping - Being made redundant can be stressful and puts pressure on family and finances. There is one workshop near the start of the session, but topics like stress are revisited in other sessions throughout the programme
Planning & Preparation - More haste, less speed! Thorough preparation in terms of clarifying your career goals, considering your options, developing a good CV and being able to talk positively and succinctly about yourself will all pay dividends in the long-run
Search & Target - This is where job-seeking starts in earnest. The 5 workshops introduce you to the A to D (the only 4 ways) of getting a job. There is one workshop on each way A for Advert, B for Bureaus (Agencies), C for Contacts (Networking) and D for Direct Approaches
Meet & Impress - The early stages are all about getting meetings and interviews. These workshops help you prepare and practice for face-to-face meetings and telephone conversations
Review and Sharing - An opportunity to share with colleagues what works best. Most ex-members come back at least once (not necessarily at this workshop) to share their experiences.

The numbers against topics show the session number for a typical programme cycle. The actual sequence of meetings may vary slightly from session to session, depending on speakers and the exact topics covered.
But I've just been made redundant and need session 1 now!
Unfortunately employers don't make people redundant to fit in with our nicely sequenced programme. Also, you may well have an interview scheduled for a session you wanted to go to.
Don't panic, we have other ways to help you
Meet the host - each meeting has a host who will introduce you to the club
The members induction pack - when you sign-up (see 'how to join') you will receive an induction pack that includes the basics (eg preparing your CV) to get you started)
Hand-outs - there are handouts for each session; normally these are emailed to attendees following each session, but exceptions are made if you have a specific requirement
Networking - you can network with colleagues who have gone through earlier stages of the job-seeking process
1-to-1s - these are individually tailored sessions with one of our volunteers
The membership benefits page will tell you more about these. See also the Frequently Asked Questions. Above all, we are an informal group and everyone does everything within their expertise to help each other.
Come in anyway to the meetings at whatever stage they are at. The key concepts are repeated and reinforced at different workshops, you will soon get up to speed. More importantly you will benefit from the comradery and learning from others.
